IT MUST be a sign...

Went to the DC United team store at RFK Friday afternoon to get some shirts. I wasn't going to make it to the match against Toronto on Saturday, but had to do SOMETHING to put a little blessing in the air... Had do my part to feed the hungry gods and help beat the 4-match losing streak. On my way out, saw one of the old Gomez stickers from a year or two ago. Sure he isn't with United anymore but his legend looms large.

And we ended up beating Toronto FC 3-2.

So I offer a sincerely big thanks to magic t-shirts, the ghost of Christian Gomez, and of course the fine work of Peralta/Moreno/Emilio for the three goals (viddie well, brother. Viddie well.)

Vamos United!

Sure it was an unevenly matched contest due to Toronto's early red-card, and with United being a superior team overall, but hell...

The match was seriously lacking in tension but screw tension: we needed bloody redemption.

Head Coach Tom Soehn and several players had commented that it'll take a while for the new mix of players to find their groove. The season opener and first CONCACAF leg against Pachuca both yielded disappointing losses for United. All valid excuses.

Thus, all eyes were on Gallardo and his mates for last night's home opener. And they delivered, bless 'em. It was looking like it would be a total shutout, but TFC slipped one in towards the end and a 4-1 victory for United sent the folks home with something to talk about.

In my recent post on Prince of Petworth, I mentioned the hassles of getting around town with a spouse on crutches. But here we finally got a bit of return on karma: An easy switch to the handicapped seats. A great view, and obviously, plenty of leg room. We got there early (hence all the empty seats in the pic above) and enjoyed the gathering mania.

Anyway. For true game details, the DC United recap is here. For my part, just a few weak photos with annotations:

(above) Sometime in the first half, after the first two United goals, it looked like several members of Barra Brava had spontaneously combusted... now THERE'S an enthusiastic support club.

(above) Speaking of Barra Brava, they went typically insane during the halftime break, roaring over the concession stands, deflating beers and pulverizing hotdogs with their mighty noise. All shouts and drums and flags and bodies flying in the corridors...

51 minutes in, the Toronto goalkeeper's mind is shattered when United scores for the third time. Throughout the game, his gestures and body-language made his disappointment very clear. He was all waving fists and woe-is-me... And that's fair enough. His team seemed strangely absent for much of the match.

...and the home fans rejoice...

Watching Barra Brava and the other support clubs was almost as much fun as watching the slaughter on the pitch. I'd prefer a closer match, but for this, a slaughter will do nicely.

This was my first home-match attendance, and the spirit of the fans was inspiring. I think of the Orioles fans at Camden Yards, and laugh... The baseball crowd in Baltimore is like a damned funeral scene compared to this joyful madness.

But wait: I'd heard there was one lonely Guinness vendor at RFK. So where the hell was he? I circled the place a few times and couldn't find that heavenly elixir anywhere. And I'm sorry mates, "Miller Lite" is not an option. I'd rather drink the blood of Canadians. And we did.

AND, in the process, I may have made a new DCU fan out of the missus. Will wonders never cease?!?

April Fuels the Fool

Just a couple of brief items this time. Some light housekeeping:

ITEM 1: The latest guest post by Your Humble Narrator is now stuck to the wall over at Prince of Petworth. Autographs in the lobby. BYOB. You must be "this" tall to ride. Thank you.

ITEM 2: With the recent purchase of a new mixer and a pair of monitors, the home studio is finally complete. This means BlueSausageInfant is set to rise again after 8 years of distractions, creative blocks, relocations, a demanding job scene, and a hundred other excuses. So later this year, MAD PSYCHEDELIC NOISE will be made at various live venues in DC. Yeehaw!

Weird and somewhat related historic artifact: The photo above. It's from the summer of 1988, Dupont Circle, during the Alternatives Festival. As PYTHAGORAS, we made a mighty racket with just open-reel tape loops, samples, a shortwave radio, some contact-miked aluminum scraps, and Jerry's amazing guitar abuse.

These days, DC seems much more friendly to the whole experimental music scene (check the Velvet Lounge's schedule for evidence). So we'll see. Watch this space for further announcements.

ITEM 3: DC United's home opener against Toronto is this Saturday. And as a strange kind of "silver lining" thing, we ended up with a better pair of seats, thanks to M's broken knee. They tell me the view will be awesome from the "handicapped" seats at RFK.

United is in Mexico today for the CONCACAF Champion's Cup semifinal, where I'm sure they'll do better than the season opener (0-2 vs. Kansas City). After that, we send the Canadians back home whimpering. Because it must be so.

ITEM 4: Finally, in honor of April Fools Day, a historic prank (from Wikipedia):

The BBC television programme Panorama ran a famous hoax in 1957, showing the Swiss harvesting spaghetti from trees. They had claimed that the despised pest the spaghetti weevil had been eradicated. A large number of people contacted the BBC wanting to know how to cultivate their own spaghetti trees.

Valentines Day...with a kick

It was (perhaps) the most romantic Valentines Day gift EVER.

I got the package from DCU, and just in time. The VD special: Two tickets for the DC United home opener (5th April against Toronto), complete with his & hers mugs and a bunch o' chocolate kisses. I got the black mug...of course.

The chocolate will be going to work tomorrow, since we at Intangible HQ don't dig the stuff (well, I don't dig it. The missus would dig it but chooses not to)...

The mugs will provide a lifetime of good service in the delivery of coffee to the brain, whereas the tickets will provide just 90 minutes of good service. But what fun. Can't wait for this bloody season to get started.

Oh, and perhaps it wasn't the most romantic Valentines Day gift ever... but, uh... the young lady was pleased. And that is the goal, after all.

"goal?"

GOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!
