Memorial on Sherman Avenue
In the wee hours of Sunday 23october, Christopher Edwards (AKA Wayne Williams) was being pulled over for a traffic violation, but fled the scene. Moments later (3:10 a.m.), Edwards ran a stop sign at Sherman Ave & Columbia Road, smashing into a car carrying three adults and a 2 year old child.
The adults were injured, but the child succumbed. Edwards was later nabbed by US Marshals, hiding under the steps of a residence in Temple Hills, Maryland.
Now Edwards is being held on 2nd-degree murder charges. Turns out he had over 30 points on his DC drivers license, and had a record of reckless driving, running red lights, and other fun stuff.
So clearly, his charge should be elevated to first-degree assbrain-ism, with a very long prison sentence and, at the very least, he should be vasectomized. Assbrains should not breed.
Anyway, the memorial is still there, looking rather melancholy in its bright colors that refuse to fade after being rained on for a week.

I'm always amazed that our system allows multiple-offenders to somehow continue to fly (or drive) under the radar with very little to discourage them from getting behind the wheel.
We had a couple of bigger stories in the news this past summer involving similar accidents. Unsuspecting family members killed in car crashes involving a driver -- somehow surviving -- that had a string of vehicle citations, DUIs, and other assorted violations prior.
Eventually, the higher profile incident leads to deserved jail time, but what consolation is that for the affected families?

The memorial is beautiful! I love the way we mostly non-ritual oriented Americans can suddenly come together and create such lively altars. Wow.
Happy Halloween! Does Gomez freak out at the trick or treaters? Jake hates the doorbell ringing over and over again. Actually.....I kind of hate it, too. Oh well.

And I agree, about these spontaneous memorials. Between this one and the one recently for Gus (the cat), this could become a new photo-topic obsession. A touch morbid, but fascinating.
And Gomez is just 10 months old, so this will be his FIRST HALLOWEEN EVER! He might be very anxious by the activity, but it's hard to tell. He didn't bat an eyelash at July 4th...
