Pillows of bliss

Great galloping cornflakes, Batman...

HOW CAN IT BE that I've been a part of the marvelous city of Washington DC all this time, and I just now get to Julia's Empanadas?

Sweet baby Jesus and his tiny brown pies, MOMMY! I've been missing out!

For a humble $3.18 ($3.50 after taxation without representation), one can score a tiny pillow of bliss. It's about the size of a young cat's head, and it's filled to bursting with marvelous things (the empanada, not the cat's head...at least I hope not...anyway...)

My inaugural empanada was the spinach. It was an aromatic mix of spinach, ricotta, muenster and cottage cheese, pine nuts, and spices, all baked in a succulent crust that could be a meal in itself. And the whole thing is neat and tidy enough to eat on the hoof, which is the general idea. Takeout, baby. Get it and get out. Other options include chorizo, turkey with onions, Chilean beef, and folks seem to love the Jamaican style.

The location in the photo is Connecticut Ave just south of Dupont Circle. This means I've spent my life walking right past this place without giving it a second thought.

Therefore, ignorance is NOT bliss.
Bliss is therein, and will cost you a mere $3.50.

Yum! I've seen this place many times, but never stopped in for a pillow of bliss. I see now that this is a big mistake. I'm going, asap!

Julia's Empanadas is really a D.C. cheap eats treasure. I can't count how many of those turkey empanadas w/spring onions I ate. Dozens? One hundred? More?

I think, for the price, this could be some of the best food in the city. It's tough to beat something that delicious for $3.50 ...

They also work well as hangover cures.

i discovered Julia's from a fellow DC blogger and friend, TOWWAS, and i wholeheartedly agree that these little pies are bliss. i tend to get the vegetarian ones, no matter what's inside them. since the vegetables of choice change all the time, i never feel like i'm eating the same thing over and over and over . . . after this review, though, i will have to try the spinach. yum.

Really? I was always scared of those places. I will take your tip! Yay! I like food!

And, oooh, I'm a big fan of several things on your "noisemakers" list. If you haven't heard the recent Faust/Nurse with Wound record, Disconnected, you are hereby ordered to do so.

I used to live on 18th Street and had Julia's Empanadas (pronounced WHO lee uz). They are indeed good.

The Greek place north of the Q Street escalators is quite good as well. Called Zorba's. Try the falafel.

SparklePony: Egad yes! I believe there was a bit of that Faust/NWW item on a recent brainwashed.com podcast. There's just too much great sound to own--and much yet to MAKE... I understand you're a noisemaker as well, yeh? Or was?

Love yr.blog, by the way...it's the REASON the baby jesus gave us the interwebs...
